For many years, Auchentoshan billed itself as the only triple-distilled single malt scotch whisky. The distillation technique is commonly touted among Irish distillers as resulting in "a lighter, smoother spirit." But Auchentoshan is far from the only triple-distilled Scotch whisky, for example: Benrinnes, Springbank, and even brands such as Benriach, Benromach, and Bruichladdich all have expressions using this technique (Bruichladdich even has a quadruple-distilled expression).
The Auchentoshan distillery was founded in 1823 by Irish refugees in Dunbarton, close to the River Clyde. The triple distillation process was a common practice in the 19th century, but was lost over the years as the industrial boom in the Lowland region waned. The ghost distilleries of Dunashill, Clydesdale, Greenock and others produced triple distillation (although at that time most of their whisky went into blends).
The truth is that today only the Auchentoshan distillery uses triple distillation for all its Single Malt production. The other distillery that is known for using this method is Springbank on its Hazelburn line in Campbeltown, but with a radical difference. Hazelburn carries out a second blank distillation (no cuts are made) to increase the volume of heavy compounds, Auchentoshan takes the heart of the second distillation. The result is a whisky with less reflux than Hazelburn and an overall lighter style.
Tasting Notes: Nose: Olive, malt, biscuit, peach, slightly salty and sweet
Palate: Medium body, salty, citrus, with a sweet note that appears afterwards and remains until the aftertaste
Aftertaste: Warm, dry and spicy. Slightly sweet
With water it changes quite a bit, bringing out sweet cereal, almonds and toffee. It's an interesting whisky, but not for beginners and perhaps not to everyone's taste. Nevertheless, it exemplifies the wide range of profiles that this wonderful drink has. Personally I have enjoyed it more with a little water and I consider it a good whisky for classic cocktails.
Incidentally, Auchentoshan is one of the few distilleries to have been attacked during World War II. In 1941, a German bombing raid targeting the ports and sawmills on the River Clyde also destroyed the whisky warehouse.
