Introduced to the world in 2014 as an experimental release by Gonzalez Byass, a historic Spanish company renowned for its sherry production since 1835, they surprised the world with Nomad Outland Whisky. A collaboration with master blender Richard Paterson, a legend in the whisky industry, who selected a blend of over 30 malt and grain whiskies for its creation.
Nomad Outland Whisky is an expression that unites the rugged landscapes of Scotland with the sun-drenched cellars of Jerez, Spain. The brand’s website tells us that: “The first 6 years are spent in bourbon casks in Scotland, and then, the liquid travels to Jerez where it remains for 1 more year in Pedro Ximénez.” While Gonzalez Byass’ online store tells us that it uses Fino, Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks and has matured between 5 and 8 years, the 2018 press documents emphasize Bourbon, Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks. Therefore we see that the whisky has been evolving.
Although it was born as an experimental expression, subsequent batches have refined the product over the years. Today it is an easy-drinking whisky that even Horst Luening has described as “love at first sip.” For us, it is a whisky that gladly draws you into the world of whisky. A good companion that offers a journey worth savoring.
Tasting Notes
Nose: The first thing that catches your nose are candied nuts, raisins and dates, then it opens up to oak, toasted notes, slightly chocolate and vanilla.
Palate: Much creamier than I expected, it is smooth with notes of honey, candied fruit and apple strudel with nuts.
Aftertaste: Medium with persistent notes of nuts and a little spice.
Personally, I was surprised to learn that it was not an initiative of Whyte & MacKay, but of Gonzalez Byass. The relationship between the two companies is not new, since for more than 100 years they have shared barrels, since the Mackenzie family, former owner of Dalmore, was attracted by the barrels of the sherry company. Today, Nomad is a proposal that has extended beyond Scotch whisky. I have good expectations for its expression of Irish whiskey.
